My first professional job out of college was with Multi-Ad Services. I freelanced for them approximately 6 months as a Keyliner before getting hired on as a full-time employee in January of 1989. After 3 years in Keyline I saw my chance to move into the Design department.
In the 7 years I spent in the design department at Multi-Ad I saw quite a lot of change in my skills. I gained extensive knowledge of design programs for the Mac and often supplied my department with tech support. I had the opportunity to design a variety of materials for a variety of clients. I was also fortunate to be requested by several clients. Eventually, I became involved in designing for the web and knew this was the area I wanted to pursue. After 10-plus years at Multi-Ad, I decided to leave and pursue Web design at a company called Cyberdesic, an internet consulting firm. The thing I missed the most about Multi-Ad was the large selection of fortune 100 companies they work with.
Cyberdesic was a breath of fresh air for me. Even though I had moved from a company of over 400 people to a company of less than 45, I was quite happy with the change. I originally was hired as a Design Coordinator and was told I would manage a team of Collaborators in the Peoria office. I did this for about 6 to 9 months before volunteering to be a Design Director for the Peoria office. I did that for another 3 to 6 months before getting the opportunity to get back to what I like best, design. I then became a Design Architect which really just meant Senior Designer. And I've been that ever since. I've seen quite a few designers come and go at Cyberdesic, especially in the position of Director, but I kept on going even when I was the only designer in the Peoria office.
I've spent over 3 years developing my skills at interface design for the Internet. Most of my time has been spent designing things the public can't view like Intranets and Extranets, but at the same time I was allowed to design quite a few Internet sites. I feel as though there is still more to discover about the Internet, so I'm eager to learn more about designing for it. I'm glad I made the switch when I did 3 1/2 years ago. It's been a great experience to be a part of Internet development.
Now I'm ready to try something new, with a new company. I hope to get an opportunity to move into a larger company again with more work. I miss the chance to work with a larger mix of people. I'm currently doing freelance design and production for both Internet and Print clients while looking for a more permanent job. My wife and I have set up a site to get more freelance here, http://www.marsprime.com/.
